Florida is maintaining its “Slavery is a Good Thing” social studies curriculum.

Remember last year, when the Florida Board of Education go out with new standards for African-American studies curriculum that require public school teachers to tell their students that there were positive aspects to being a slave? And most people are like that, What the hell? Including the governor of Florida Ron DeSantiswas then a competitor for the GOP nomination, literally one of their own speak, “anyone who is implying that slavery has a positive side is crazy”? Well, the state decided to maintain its crazy policy.

Despite updating some elements of the statewide social studies curriculum, the board of education, according to Politics, “leaving intact and controversial pieces of black history.” Specifically, middle school students are still required to learn “how slaves developed skills that, in some cases, could be applied to their personal benefit.” That’s right: Florida officials had a year to think it over and decided to go ahead and say that being forced to become someone else’s property isn’t so bad.

Last year, after the new standards were announced, Florida rep Byron Donalds—only black Republican congressman representing Florida—tweeted, “slavery’s attempt to promote personal gain is misguided and needs to be corrected.” When stopping a campaign, Tim Scott, the only black Republican in the Senate, speak reporters, “As a country founded on freedom, the greatest deprivation of freedom is slavery. There is no luck… in slavery…. What slavery really is [was] separating families, mutilating people and even raping their wives. It’s just devastation.”

DeSantis did not appear to comment on the most recent news, although of course it would not be surprising to hear him defend teaching students that there were some positive aspects of being a slave. During a debate for governor in 2022, Mr declared that the United States was built on stolen land is “not true” (and that students should not be taught much), and last year, Mr. Supported The Florida Department of Education’s decision to ban the College Board’s AP African American Studies course comes after his administration claimed the curriculum lacked “educational value.”
