Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico arrived in the capital after the shooting

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has been transferred from a hospital in the center of the country, two weeks after being seriously injured in a shooting.

The hospital in the central city of Banska Bystrica said he was currently “nursing at home”. Reports say he was airlifted to the capital Bratislava and brought home to continue his long road to recovery.

The 59-year-old man was left behind fighting for life after being shot four times at close range in the central town of Handlova on May 15 as he greeted supporters after a government meeting.

Mr. Fico is said to have undergone several surgeries.

The head of Roosevelt Hospital, Miriam Lapunikova, paid tribute to her medical colleagues “for a job well done” and thanked Mr. Fico for being a “disciplined patient.”

“We wish the prime minister much strength and above all positive energy during his physical and temporal recovery,” she wrote on Facebook.

Slovak television reported that he was flown by helicopter to Bratislava early Thursday evening. There was an increased security presence around his apartment in Bratislava’s diplomatic district, not far from the city center.

The veteran politician, who has served as prime minister for more than 10 of the past 18 years, returned to power last September as head of a populist-nationalist coalition.

Slovakia has become increasingly polarized in recent months and the attack has only deepened tensions.

His attacker, named by local media as Juraj Cintula, 71, was killed was detained for attempted murder.

He is currently receiving psychiatric treatment and if convicted, he faces the rest of his life in prison.
