Ukraine war: Russia attacks Kharkov supermarket

At least two people were killed after Russian forces attacked a supermarket in the northern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv with two glide bombs, local officials said.

A large fire could be seen raging at the Epicentr K home goods store on the city’s northern outskirts.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said more than 200 people may have been inside the supermarket when it was attacked.

Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov wrote on Telegram: “A large number of people are missing. Many people are injured.

“This is pure terrorism,” Mr. Terekhov said.

President Zelensky added: “The attack on Kharkov is another manifestation of Russia’s madness.

“Only crazy people like it [Russian President Vladimir] Putin is capable of killing and terrorizing people in this way.”

The attack will highlight Ukrainian worries about not having adequate air defense systems.

Mr. Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine needs to be able to defend itself and needs air defense systems from Western allies.

The attack is another sign of Russia’s growing confidence.

The country’s forces seem to be taking advantage of the opportunity to promote their advantage while Ukraine waits for more Western weapons to arrive at the front.

Glider bombs were created by adding folding wings and satellite guidance to old Soviet bombs. They are cheap but destructive.
