Four people were killed and 16 injured after a two-storey building collapsed on the Spanish island of Majorca, local emergency authorities said.
Several people are said to be trapped at the Medusa Beach Club site, a beachfront restaurant on Cartago Street in the regional capital Palma de Majorca.
The incident is believed to have occurred at around 8:30 pm local time (7:30 pm BST). There are fears that some people could be trapped in the rubble.
Emergency services told local media they were completing rescue operations and securing the area just after midnight local time.
The floor of the facility collapsed Thursday night, sending people falling to the basement below, which also contained customers and employees.
Palma Fire Department Chief Eder García told local media that most of those affected by the collapse were foreigners and tourists, El Pais reported.
A local police spokesman told reporters that the balcony may have collapsed due to too much weight, but stressed that the exact cause was still under investigation.
One man was pulled from the rubble with a broken arm and rescuers are working on the assumption that more people are trapped. Officials asked onlookers to remain silent so they could hear the voices of survivors.
The mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, is said to have arrived at the scene with the deputy mayor of tourism.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez sent his condolences to the families of the victims.
He said he was closely monitoring all the latest developments and his government was ready to send all necessary support.
President of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens, said she was shocked by the incident and sent her condolences to the families of the victims.
Ms Prohens thanked the emergency services and also Mr Sánchez for his support.
Majorca is the largest island of Spain’s Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean.
Last year, more than 17 million people visited the island.
