Fans who followed ESPN’s Wednesday night coverage of San Antonio and New Orleans were rewarded with a little extra. There is a Zion Williamson see the court. Before the game, Williamson did some work on the field and put on a show for those present, mainly team staff.

But like most things in this social media age, Zion’s screen and most notably his basic 360 windmill were posted to Twitter and shown on national television instantly. Get a response from everyone. It’s always great to see Williamson on the floor because it looks like his leg is healing. But the fancy dancing before the game was just a tease for the fans.

At this point, perhaps it’s best for the Pelicans, who beat Spurs 113-103, to keep Zion at bay. The team has come this far without him because he is unfit for a single game in the regular season. Let’s get him ready for next season and try to get in shape. No one needs to watch Williamson warm up like he’s going to play, then head back into the dressing room and step out for a streetwear opening tip. Zion’s suit is a dope but still not a skin that helps the Pelicans on the field.

I’m pretty sure commissioner Adam Silver saw Williamson windmill before the game and probably shook his head in disappointment. Silver knows Zion doesn’t play in the game last night, and I’m sure he became frustrated that it took all these players a year or so to come back from injury. Williamson has basically been out for a year, like Kawhi Leonard in Los Angeles and Jamal Murray in Denver. Ben Simmons hasn’t played an NBA game in nearly a calendar year, and for James Wiseman, it’s been more than a year.

So the federation cannot be satisfied with this, along with the load management dilemma they have faced for about a decade. This happened when the new guy arrived, and his approach was the opposite of the previous commissioner. Former NBA commissioner David Stern has ruled like a tyrant, and his words are final. Stern mostly doesn’t serve players, and Silver doesn’t seem to be doing anything other than that. Now that player-friendly attitude kept biting Silver in the ass. Say what you want, but there’s not much Silver can do about player load management. If a player says he has a problem, the team basically has to listen to him. Hmmm, sounds familiar?

Watching Zion roam freely before the game only gave fans hope to ease a few minutes later as his condition remains the same all year. He remains out indefinitely. I honestly wonder if he’ll ever come back as a Pelican. Rumors have been floating around for a while now that he might not happy in New Orleans.

If that’s the truth about Zion not happy in the Big Easy, which put New Orleans in a difficult position. Williamson has a lot of untapped potential and he’s still very young at 21. But we know how often these situations play out in the NBA. When the star player is unhappy and no longer wants to join the franchise, that guy can almost always be forced out of town. If Zion is tired of the Pelicans, then this scenario is only a matter of time.

That’s where we are now, and the Pelicans find themselves in muddy waters trying to navigate the whole thing Zion injury problem. And they don’t seem to get much help from the commissioner’s office. If Williamson isn’t ready to begin the 2022-23 campaign, it may be time for New Orleans to cut its losses and move on.

Don’t get me wrong, it would be bad to trade a player in such good form in his early 20s, but when he lacks so much time on the pitch, the team may not have many other options. If a player is so injured that he can’t play the game, he doesn’t need to stay out of the ring the way Williamson did before this Spurs game.

Even if the fan isn’t in the arena during his warm-up, everyone has a camera, and the session will be recorded and streamed as it was. People saw that footage on their way to the game, then when they got there, Zion was on the sidelines in a suit with flashy jewels on him. It’s not a pretty look and sends the wrong message to fans. The whole workout of pregnancy in the arena just needs to stop. It’s unnecessary and only serves as a disappointment to fans if that player doesn’t participate in the game that night.
