New York Jets defender Zach Wilson picked up a meniscus injury and bruised bone in his right knee during the team’s opening game of last season against the Philadelphia Eagles, which is expected to keep him out for two to four weeks. .

Injury puts the second-year quarterback in doubt at the start of the 2022 season, which begins September 8. The Jets will host the Baltimore Ravens in Week One.

Wilson will now undergo a procedure to repair the meniscus injury, which is not a complete tear, providing a second doctor to confirm the diagnosis.

The injury occurred during the first quarter of the Jets’ competition in Philadelphia when he rolled out of his pocket and tried to move to his right. He made a cut to avoid an Eagles defender, dashed forward and limped off.

Wilson was brought into the dressing room shortly afterwards and replaced by substitute Mike White. The Jets won with a score of 24-21.

Before leaving the game, Wilson completed 3 of 5 passes at 23 yards with an intercept. He added seven quick yards on a single girdle.

The 23-year-old threw 2,334 yards in his rookie season, with nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He missed four games with a right knee injury.

If Wilson is unable to start the 2022 season, the Jets could switch to White or veteran Joe Flacco.

White made three starts for injured Wilson last season and was 1-2. He completed 66.7% of his passes for 953 yards, five touchdowns and eight interceptions in four games.

Flacco, who won the Super Bowl in his 11 seasons with Raven, may finally face his former team to start the season. He lost last year’s only game in Week 11 to the Miami Dolphins, while he completed 27 of 42 passes with three TDs and no interceptions in his two appearances.
