You don’t want to install the latest iOS 15 beta update – it could break Face ID
Do not download Apple’s latest iOS 15 beta. That’s the warning coming from users who downloaded the iOS 15 update after it allegedly caused Face ID to stop working for them.

Then when they went to reset Face ID to see if that solved the problem, they were shown an error message saying ‘Face ID is not available’ (via MacRumors (opens in a new tab)).
It’s unclear if other iPhones have Face ID (including iPhone X, iPhone 11, iPhone 12″and iPhone 13″as well as their respective Pro and mini versions) are affected by the issue, but to be on the safe side, we advise you to steer clear of the latest version. iOS 15 beta for now.
Thankfully, though, if you’ve been affected by this Face ID issue, there might be a fix. Some users who are experiencing problems have said that downloading iOS 16 solved it.
Analysis: Why not just update to iOS 16?
If iOS 16 is available to download and install it can solve this iOS 15 problem, why don’t users immediately use Apple’s latest software?
Firstly, iOS 16 itself is far from perfect, as is the case with the new software. Specific case – some iPhone 14″ and iPhone 14 Pro users already have problems with FaceTime and iMessage (core phone features) until Apple releases patches and fixes them. An earlier error also shows iPhone camera not working properlyagain until Apple fixes it.
On the other hand, iOS 15 is a pretty stable release, having been out for over a year, so despite this latest issue, some users may want to stick with it until Apple can. Addresses major issues with iOS 16.
Other users may not want to install the latest update for fear that it will worsen the performance of their iPhone.
Operating system updates are primarily designed around the latest hardware, so they won’t be well optimized for older devices. So people using older iPhones may find their system slower after updating them to the latest iOS version.
Finally, there will be some people who want to benefit from the new features of iOS 16, but their smartphones are too old. Handheld devices such as iPhone 6s, iPhone 7and Original iPhone SE all are compatible with iOS 15, but have not cut the compatibility of iOS 16. So these users – who want to keep using their old phone for one reason or another – will rely on these updates for older iOS software to keep their devices safe.
Hopefully Apple will fix this and any other iOS 15 bugs before the update leaves beta, but then don’t expect too many iOS 15 updates – we wouldn’t be surprised if 15.7.1. As the final iOS 15 release unless major issues arise.
