Yo-Yo test and Dexa to be part of selection criteria as BCCI increases focus on player fitness | Cricket News


NEW DELHI: Cricket Board of India (BCCI) has decided to increase the focus on players’ fitness ahead of the upcoming ODI 2023 World Cup, and on Sunday reintroduced the Yo-Yo test as one of the criteria for selecting the Indian national team. Besides the Yo-Yo test, the Dexa (bone scan test) is also considered part of the selection criteria.
BCCI made the decision during a high-level review meeting in Mumbai. The meeting that has been pending since India was knocked out of the T20 World Cup semi-finals in November has finally taken place in the presence of the BCCI president. Roger Binnyhonorary secretary Jay Shah, captain Rohit Sharmacoach Rahul Dravid, head of NCA VVS Laxman and selector of Chetan Sharma.
“The Yo-Yo and Dexa test will now be part of the selection criteria and implemented in the custom roadmap of the central player pool,” BCCI said in a statement.
The Yo-Yo test is an aerobics endurance test that involves running between markers 20 meters apart at increasing speeds. The test was introduced during Virat Kohli’s tenure as India captain and the initial passing score was 16.1 before rising to 16.5.
Issues of player availability, workload management and fitness parameters were also discussed during the meeting along with the roadmap to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, to be held in India. in October and November.
It was also decided that emerging players would have to play a ‘critical domestic season’ to qualify for the national selection.
“Emerging players will have to play a substantial domestic season to qualify for selection to the national team,” the statement read.
The Board of Directors also stated that National Cricket Academy will work with teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to track Indian players targeted for this year’s Twenty20 tournament.
“Keeping in mind the men’s FTP and preparations for ICC CWC 2023, the NCA will work in tandem with the IPL Franchise to monitor Indian players targeted for IPL 2023,” the statement added.
The fitness of Indian cricketers is a concern as the likes of Deepak Chahar frequently break bones. Top speed racer Jaspirt Bumrah also had to miss a long time due to a back injury.
