Xbox Series X may get new graphics modes that could save you money
Microsoft is looking into the Xbox Series X’s additional power-saving modes that may affect performance on the console. Soon, you’ll be able to choose to lower the resolution and frame rate in-game to save on energy bills.
Microsoft sent Xbox Series X| S owners signed up for the Xbox Insider program, a questionnaire that asks the console’s player base about their energy consumption. The ‘power saving features’ question list asks for detailed input on improvements and additions to Xbox Series X power saving modes, as reported by Windows Central (opens in a new tab).
Microsoft asked if respondents were concerned about their energy bills when playing games for long periods of time, and if they modified their hardware settings to mitigate these issues. The company suggested making adjustments such as ‘changing resolution, frame rate, visual effects or GPU’.
Hardware manufacturers are also looking into automating features like resolution and frame rate when games are inactive to save energy. However, from the questionnaire, it is clear that Microsoft has also thought of the negative effects of performance loss. While we have covered Xbox Series X update saves energy in previous months this was related to lower standby power levels, not related to active gaming sessions.
One of the suggested questions asked for a response to this statement: “I’m worried that enabling power-saving features might negatively affect my gaming experience.” Microsoft has yet to state whether these features will be implemented in a future software update, but the company has considered options here, whether that means moving down from dynamic 4K. lower resolutions like 1440p or 1080p and limit the maximum FPS. is still viewed.
How much money can Xbox Series X’s power saving mode save?
Xbox Series X is quote (opens in a new tab) like using 153W of power while playing an active game. If we take the recent mean from electricity costs (opens in a new tab) taking into account you are spending about 2.26 cents/min (with the console running at full speed). In the UK, however, that rate rises to 5.20 pence/ph. If medium (opens in a new tab) Xbox Series X users played their console two hours a day for a week, then a total of 31.64 cents in the US and 72.83 cents in the UK. The console when used in standby will draw 0.5 W, which is significantly more power efficient than the 13W of Sleep.
A power saving mode that reduces stress on the console’s RDNA 2 GPU can result in a significant reduction in capacity per hour. AMD graphics power the Xbox Series X, a tailor-made Scarlett processor that is technically capable of delivering a TDP of up to 200W over a 320-bit memory bus. Undervolting is certainly possible with this hardware, where less power means reduced performance, as hardware-powered graphics cards can, especially in best gaming laptop. As for how much of an impact this will have on gaming performance, it remains to be seen if this update has any results.
