WWE 2K22 Review – A big step in the right direction

WWE 2K22’s long road to release is considered a redemption story as dramatic as any TV story. The series took a couple of years to regroup after the shipwreck was the 2K20 of 2019, and the passage of time allowed it to learn some useful new information. While it doesn’t take the franchise to bold new heights, an improved game engine and renewed focus on accessibility make it most enjoyable – and most of all possible. playable – WWE game for a while.

The new engine removes some of the complicated mechanics that made previous 2K games such a chore to play. Instead, it adopts a more arcade-style approach. 2K22 isn’t the second installment of the beloved Smackdown series, but grappling simply feels more intuitive and allows for faster-paced matches. Grappling is condensed into light and heavy moves mapped into two buttons, which I find easier to remember and implement. Melee combos reward big hits by chaining simple inputs, giving muggers a viable attack form. Speaking of which, I love that pinning and posting gets rid of the annoying “needle stop” minigames and goes back to the more fun intensity of pressing buttons to get out.

To reduce the incessant counter-attack that often occurs among advanced players, a new counter called Breaker forces you to predict upcoming moves by pressing the same button you think your opponent will do. . Breakers only apply to strikes and grappling-based attacks; a universal inversion still exists for everything else, but I have mixed feelings about this new addition. The element of chance meant that I accepted offending strings for guessing the wrong input regardless of my reverse time, which frustrated me sometimes. On the other hand, it allows both players to actually execute each other’s moves instead of just finding cheap ways to interrupt lengthy counterattacks. In addition, even though I often get beaten up, I rarely lose. The more skilled player will still win the day no matter how many powerbombs they eat on their way to victory. Breakers aren’t the perfect solution, but I lean more toward them.

2K22 feels easier to play overall, but performing certain operations still feels complicated. For example, command difference between different pedal and apron attacks could be simpler. A good tutorial at the start of the game guides the player through the basics, but I wish it went further as I still have to look for important mechanics like locating opponents or getting in/out of the ring. fight. Picking up objects can still be unresponsive, and some actions retain the slow, over-animated feel that 2K games have endured for years.

Overall, the 2K22 looks great. Character models appear almost exactly like their real-world counterparts, animations smoothly reproduce the signature nuances of superstars, and lighting and cinematography are improved. make people look better than ever. I especially love the era-specific lighting for historic arenas, like Halloween Havoc ’97. This list is horribly outdated due to including many superstars who left WWE in 2021, but this works in favor of 2K22. Names like Jeff Hardy, Keith Lee and Ember Moon can now perform elsewhere, but using them nonetheless defeats having an actual slimmer lineup.

All in all, I didn’t experience any serious hiccups. Smaller hiccups can still occur like sometimes a spaghetti string or a character gets stuck or warped on geometry, but those hiccups fall into a harmless (and funny) state. They don’t happen often enough to ruin the experience. Unfortunately, playing online felt unstable at the time of publication. I’ve been having trouble connecting to matches and the matches I’ve been in have been severely laggy at times. Hopefully this will be resolved soon but you may want to avoid online mode for the foreseeable future.

2K22 has no shortage of modes, the most prominent of which is Showcase. This interactive documentary allows players to follow the legendary career of cover star Rey Mysterio by playing a selection of 12 matches. Previous Showcases did a great job of covering their respective topics, but 2K22 fell short. While the presentation was fine – mid-game transitions to the actual scene of the battle you’re playing notably rad – most of the selected matches left me scratching my head.

The wide span from 1997-2005 of Rey’s career focused solely on Eddie Guerrero, in which you fought him twice, and one of those times was the mode’s only WCW offering. Rey’s WrestleMania 22 World Title was absent because Kurt Angle was not in the game. Massive feuds against the likes of Chavo Guerrero, Chris Jericho, CM Punk and Cody Rhodes also cannot be cut off due to the names listed working for rival organizations. These were replaced with less memorable matches, such as Mysterio’s 2009 SummerSlam Intercontinental Title defense against Dolph Ziggler or a random Raw match against Gran Metalik. I don’t expect Showcase to hit every milestone in Rey’s career, but this is like a brief recap of his run that has pulled out most of the really great stuff.

Following Rey’s career might not have been smooth, but I’ve had a better time building my own superstar legacy in MyRise. Creating a wrestler from scratch, including choosing their background RPG style, got me involved in my star’s fate in the first place, and the mode is delightfully dense. From Performance Center training to NXT to the main line-up, I enjoy guiding my arrogant Hollywood army to the top of the company through scripts of choice, many within That number is very interesting. I won a match to force my opponent to wrestle in a chicken suit for a month and picked matches with the big social media stars to get them into the ring. Stupid and/or confusing lowercase? I don’t know if I’m convincing enough to do it one more time, but MyRise got me thinking about the titles to pursue and the swaggers I’ll instigate when I leave the mode. I always itch when I go back to it.

The Creation Suite isn’t significantly better than what was previously offered, but it’s still an enjoyable time. It took me hours to create superstars, championships, arenas, titantron videos and more. Space Mode offers more options for playing Vince McMahon as you book shows, matches, contests and more. You can also follow a personal career now, but Universe is for your own enjoyment and doesn’t provide enough tangible rewards to keep my interest long.

Universe mode has a particularly flat feel compared to MyGM, giving you direct control over a brand, including drafting superstars, booking shows, and appeasing personalities to win. in the ranking battle with rival brands. This destination has satisfied the fantasy booker in me. I’ve had a great time creating quality contests and contests by strategically matching my superstar’s style and managing my budget for killer shows. . MyGM provides a granular level of data but provides regular guidance that keeps me on track and makes my decisions. Like MyRise, MyGM caught me by surprise and often made me think outside of the game about how to build the next show, what talent to sign next, and how to sabotage my competition.

MyFaction is another new destination that is like a game on its own. Fans of WWE mobile games like Supercard can feel right at home as you purchase bundles of cards (using real money and in-game) to assemble a “club” of the best cards based on numbers. their statistics and other perks. You will fight other factions, but the fight takes place in the ring rather than pure TCG. Nothing more than that. There are various daily, weekly, and tower challenges, but it focuses only on playing matches, filling in achievement bars, and buying cards. Packs are reasonably priced and you’ll earn enough to buy a pack by playing a series of mini-matches, but you’ll always go further when using your wallet as standard with these. MyFaction adds the satisfaction of watching the meter fill while playing random matches, but it’s not my favorite mode and worth skipping if the card aspect doesn’t tell you.

Next 2K22 No Mercy or Here Comes the Pain? No, but it’s a dramatically improved return that’s more fun to play than WWE games have felt in ages. Plus, the sheer number of modes, all of which are decent, means there’s something fun to nibble on outside of random exhibition matches or playing online. There’s still a lot of work to be done, but like a retired veteran returning to play a surprisingly solid match, WWE 2K22 manages to shake off the ring’s rust and perform better. opponents expect.
