Staff at some Louisiana hospitals are doing timed drills, sprinting from patient rooms and through hallways to locked medicine cabinets where drugs used to induce abortion, incomplete miscarriage and postpartum hemorrhage will have to be kept — as newly classified controlled substances — starting Oct. 1. That’s not the only preparation taking place across the state as the law targeting mifepristone and misoprostol, the first of its kind in the United States, goes into effect in two weeks.

Pharmacists are still trying to decipher the guidance from state officials about the two drugs and the diagnosis codes that will be required before they can be prescribed. And they and doctors are voicing concerns about the additional layers of confusion expected from the law, which they fear will put patients with serious pregnancy-related complications at greater risk.

In addition to inducing abortion, misoprostol is also used, among other things, to prevent postpartum hemorrhage, which is incidentally a Leading cause of maternal death in Louisiana.

“It adds a few minutes,” Jennifer Avegno, New Orleans Health Department director, told Parcel about the upcoming restrictions on the drug. “Most patients will probably pull through.
