Worshippers in Tokyo plunge into ice bath to mark new year
Devotees of a Tokyo shrine welcomed the new year with an ice-cold bath, an annual tradition that dates back 68 years.
Forty people took part in the event at the Teppou-zu Inari shrine on Sunday, where men and women dressed in loincloths and white robes before taking a dip in water filled with ice cubes.
Shinto rituals are said to purify the soul and bring good health in the new year.
