FIFA has announced that alcohol will not be sold at the eight World Cup stadiums in Qatar.

Those in the corporate area of the stadiums at the tournament can still buy alcohol.

The change of stance was made two days before the World Cup began on Sunday when Qatar played Ecuador.

“Following discussions between the host country authorities and Fifa, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on Fifa fan festivals, other fan destinations and locations licensed venues, removing beer shops from the grounds of Qatar’s Fifa World Cup 2022,” said a statement from world football’s governing body.

“There is no impact on the sale of Bud Zero which will remain available at all Qatar World Cup stadiums.

“The host country authorities and Fifa will continue to ensure that the stadiums and surrounding areas provide an enjoyable, respectful and pleasant experience for all fans.

“The tournament organizers appreciate AB InBev’s continued understanding and support for our shared commitment to serving everyone during the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.”
