Nottinghamshire’s Jake Wightman won Britain’s first gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon.
The 28-year-old won the 1500m title in a time of 3 minutes 29.23 seconds against Olympic champions Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Mohamed Katir of Spain.
Wightman won the championship with the fastest time in the world this year and broke the 200 m distance.
It is by far the biggest success of his career, having previously won the European and Commonwealth bronzes and finished only 10th at last year’s Olympics in Tokyo.
World Athletics has moved Wightman’s medal ceremony to Tuesday evening local time because Wednesday’s original ceremony would clash with his flight home.
Elsewhere at the championship, defending champion Dina Asher-Smith reached the 200m final.
The 26-year-old finished second in 21.96 seconds – the best of the season – in the semi-final behind Tamara Clark of the US.
