The Worcester Warriors will have all competitions suspended if they fail to provide proof of funds to safely hold matches by midday Friday, the RFU said.
Worcester has more than £25 million in debt, including £6 million in unpaid taxes, and faces management if they cannot find a new buyer.
Players and staff are yet to be fully paid for August amid serious concerns about September’s payrolls.
On Tuesday, co-owners Colin Goldring and Jason Whittingham said it had agreed to terms with an undisclosed buyer, but the deal has not been signed yet.
The Rugby League on Thursday night set a deadline of 12pm on Friday for Worcester to prove funds were provided so it could “safely hold matches”.
The RFU also confirmed that “any suspension can be lifted once the club is financially more secure and can demonstrate its ability to safely host matches.”
Worcester opened their Premiership season with a 45-14 defeat to London Ireland on Saturday and will host their first home game against Exeter on Sunday.
A statement said: “The RFU, PRL and DCMS have sought assurances from Worcester Warriors owners regarding funding and potential new ownership proposals for several weeks.
“All parties are concerned that the lack of funds will not allow the club to safely organize matches for players and spectators, as well as provide ongoing medical care for the players. .
“In particular, the local authorities have not yet issued the club a General Safety Certificate to allow matches to be played at Sixways Stadium.
“All parties must balance the club’s need to have time to raise funds to hold matches safely, with the unwavering need for the fans, players and support staff of all. All teams for matches will be held at Sixways Stadium this weekend.
“The RFU has written to the Worcester Warriors to confirm that they will be immediately suspended from all competitions, including the Gallagher Premiership, Allianz Premier 15s and Allianz Cup, if their ability to safely host matches is not ensured. play at Sixways Stadium by 12 noon.
