Woman who reported police officer ex-husband for rape found investigation ‘more traumatic than incident’ | UK News

A woman who accused her ex-husband of being raped by police said detectives mishandled the case and their investigation was “more painful than the actual incident”.

The woman, whom we will refer to as “Sally” because she cannot be identified for legal reasons, has said that those running the investigation into her allegations are colleagues or old friend of the defendant.

Sally, also a police officer in northern England, said the first person she confided in waited for her to finish telling her story, before telling her he had known her husband since school and had been with her. he went on a team tour.

Sally said: “He let me tell him everything that happened from start to finish, and then finally spoke, let me tell you I grew up with him.”

Sally said she was raped by her ex-husband.

She added: “The detective sergeant is leading the investigation, she told me my partner used to work for her too, which shocked me.”

It took eight years for Sally to come forward after the rape, and she only regained her courage after learning that her former partner was also accused of abusing his new wife.

Separately, she later discovered a neighbor had sounded the alarm about loud, potentially violent behavior in the early hours of the morning.

The man wrote: ‘The worrying thing is that he works for the police and I think he should have known better.

Sally said the alleged victim was never formally interviewed.

Following her allegations, Sally’s husband faces both a criminal investigation and an investigation under the Police Occupational Standards. She said that when the criminal investigation was dropped, it appeared to be a sign to cancel the internal review.

She said: “I just feel untrusted. I feel like it’s all covered up.”

Her husband continued his job until his retirement and at one point it was assumed he would work in the same building as Sally.

A retired police officer, who we cannot identify for legal reasons, said she accused her ex-husband, also a police officer, of rape.

After requesting subject access, Sally discovered that records passed to the Crown Prosecution Service included what she said were false allegations against her, claiming that she had repeatedly access records about her husband.

Overall, she felt unsupported and felt “deprived” of asking for updates on the incident. And she said, as a police officer, she was “not allowed to be a victim”.

‘If it happens again, I won’t report it’

Very reluctantly, Sally admitted she had lost faith in her own forces.

She said: “If it happens to me again, I will not report it. I find the investigation more painful than the actual incident.”

The Home Office has asked all police forces to check their officers and staff against a national police database.

Sally said police need to take complaints against themselves more seriously. And she believes the police would have acted differently had her ex-husband not been an officer.

That is of great concern – that the police have a blind spot for their own bad apples.

Sky News has contacted the police force Sally works for, but they declined to comment.
