Woman arrested on suspicion of neglect over child death linked to Strep A | UK News


A woman has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect following the death of an 8-year-old possibly linked to a Strep A infection in Wales.

According to Wales Online, the 33-year-old woman was arrested on Friday December 23 and later released while police continue to investigate.

The child from the town of Lampeter, Ceredigion, died on the evening of Thursday, December 22.

Public Health Wales is looking into possible links to invasive strep A, although the child’s death is currently described as “unexplained”.

Dr Graham Brown, infectious disease control consultant for Public Health Wales, said: “Public Health Wales is working with Hywel Dda University Health Council and Ceredigion Council following the death of a child in Lampeter.

“We send our deepest condolences to the family, friends and all those affected.

“Public Health Wales cannot comment on individual cases.

“We are investigating associations with invasive group A streptococcal disease (iGAS), a very rare complication of group A streptococcal infections.

“While we understand that parents can be concerned, cases of iGAS are still very rare in Wales and children are at very low risk.”

If the child’s death from iGAS is confirmed, her death will follow that of Hanna Roap, 7, from Penarth, South Wales, and another child from Powys who has not been named.

The families of these two children have confirmed their deaths from iGAS.

Two children under 10 in Scotland have died with Strep A since 3 OctoberScotland’s Department of Public Health has said.

The organization said it was aware of seven deaths among invasive group A streptococcal (iGAS) infections between October 3 and December 25.

21 children in the UK have died from invasive strep A.

What is Strep A and how is it spread?

Group A strep bacteria can cause a variety of infections, ranging from mild illness to deadly illness.

Diseases caused by strep A include infectious skin impetigo, erythema, and strep throat.

While most infections are mild, this bacteria can cause a life-threatening illness called invasive group A streptococcus (iGAS).
