Wolfenstein: The New Order rebooted the classic FPS series in 2014, turning it into a sometimes extremely violent, incoherent stealth game about Nazi robo-slaying in an alternate 1960s. It was great. It’s also free to keep if you get it from the Epic Games Store right now.

I think it works because, for all the quirks of being both a dumb ass game and a Feel The Feels game, can we have a prize right now, please game, Wolfenstein: The new sequel knows itself very well. It borrows from BioShock and it borrows from Half-Life 2 (to put it mildly), but I don’t believe it really has the ambition to be the expensive B-movie With A Heart. Oddly enough, there’s an honesty to it – it’s not like BioShock Infinite, where flowery talk sits uncomfortably next to meaty mayhem. Yes, this is totally taking itself and its Nazi magic cyborg, but that’s not the same as believing itself to be the capital-I Important.
