‘Without a doubt, he beats Canelo [Alvarez]’

Dmitry Bivol defeated Canelo Alvarez. And formidable boxers like Artur Beterbiev and David Benavidez are often seen as legitimate threats to the once-king of the pound from Mexico.

Bob Santos believes you should add another boxer to this list: super middleweight contender David Morrell, who co-trains with Santos.

Morrell put on a sensational performance this past Saturday at The Armory in Minneapolis, where he dominated and then stopped Aidos Yerbossynuly in round 12.^order and the final round.

“Without a doubt, he beats Canelo,” Santos told me and Kenneth Bouhairie on The PBC Podcast. “… Morrell is taller than Bivol, much longer than Bivol. He’s left-handed. I can tell you for a fact that he is a bigger puncher than Bivol. What can Canelo do to defeat him? He won’t send the letter [Morrell]. …

“He can basically do everything that Bivol can do but he’s better, longer and faster.”

Santos, who has worked with many boxers over the past three decades, doesn’t stop there. He also believes Morrell (8-0.7 KOs) will also beat Benavidez, who is usually a 168-pound second-place athlete behind Alvarez.

Morrell has said he wants to take on Benavidez in his next match, but the two-time champion is on his way to face Caleb Plant.

“I know David Benavidez very well,” he said. “… I think the best thing about him. He’s very talented. That said, David Morrell is just different. I have no doubt that David Morrell will win him over. Same thing with Caleb Plant or any of those guys.

“David Morrell is a special, special talent. Believe me when I say it”.

Morrell gave the previously undefeated Yerbossynuly a heavy blow, after which the Kazakh boxer was transferred to a nearby hospital. He was placed in a coma and remains in a critical, but stable condition.
