With the close of his Twitter deal, Elon Musk’s geopolitical influence is set to grow.

Over the past four weeks, Elon Musk has laid out a peace plan for Russia and Ukraine that outraged Ukrainian officials. He posted a tweet about Iran’s internet access that exposed government protesters to a scam plot. He also suggested in a newspaper interview that China could be appeased if it were given partial control over Taiwan. An official in Taipei asked him to withdraw his offer.

Musk has in recent months emerged as a new, tumultuous actor on the global political stage. While many billionaire executives enjoy tweeting their two cents about world affairs, none have come close to Mr. Musk’s influence and ability to cause trouble. He has sometimes run into situations even when he was advised not to, and has left a lot of messes.

While the majority of Mr Musk’s fortune comes from his stake in electric car company Tesla, his influence comes mainly from rocket company SpaceX, which runs the Starlink satellite network. Starlink can project internet service to conflict zones and geopolitical hotspots, and it has become an essential tool for the Ukrainian military.

Musk’s influence will grow as the Twitter acquisition closes. He’s called himself a libertarian, and he’s supposed to be moderating Twitter’s content.
