DALLAS — More than 1,000 flights were canceled and many more delayed on Monday, and more are expected in the coming days as Texas and surrounding states deal with freezing temperatures and high volumes of traffic. the winter rain.

Nearly 350 flights were canceled at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and more than 200 at Dallas Love Field, according to tracking service FlightAware. About 4,700 flights were delayed nationwide.

Dallas-based Southwest has eliminated more than 500 flights, or about 12% of its entire schedule, while Fort-Worth-based American has reduced about 200 flights.

Monday’s interruption followed Southwest’s Crisis in December started with a winter storm but continued after most other airlines had recovered. Southwest canceled about 16,700 flights in the last 10 days of the year, and the US Department of Transportation is investigating.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for parts of northern Texas beginning Monday afternoon. An icy mixture covered some roads as snow and rain fell and then froze.

High temperatures are expected to stay at 30 degrees Celsius (-1.1 degrees Celsius) through Thursday.

In addition to Texas, forecasters say ice could accumulate in neighboring Oklahoma and Arkansas and extend eastward into the Deep South and Midwest this week. Schools and colleges in Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas planned to close or switch to online learning on Tuesday.
