Wins for stars of Baby Reindeer, The Bear and The Crown

Baby Reindeer, the hugely popular but controversial British TV series, took the Emmy Awards by storm, winning four awards at the ceremony in Los Angeles.

Creator and star of the show, Scottish comedian Richard Gaddwon three of those awards – for acting, writing and producing the show.

His co-star Jessica Gunningwho played Martha’s stalker, was named best supporting actress in a limited series.

“Oh my God, you idiots,” she said as she accepted the award.

“Thank you so much. I really feel like I’m going to wake up any minute and this is all just a dream.”

Gadd’s story of being stalked by a woman for years and sexually abused by a male TV personality became the most talked-about show of the year.

However, the claim of “being a true story” has been disputed, and the real-life woman who is said to have inspired Gunning’s character is now suing Netflix for defamation, negligence, and breach of privacy.

When accepting the award for best writing for a short story, Gadd shared with the audience: “Ten years ago, I was very disappointed.

“I never thought I could get my life back together. I never thought I could fix what happened and stand on my own two feet.

“And then over a decade later, here I am, receiving one of the biggest writing awards in television.

“I don’t mean that to sound arrogant. I want to encourage anyone who is going through a tough time to persevere.”

Bear won three acting awards in comedy categories, including best comedy actor for Jeremy Allen Whitewho plays Carmy, for the second year in a row.

Ebony moss-Bachrach (Richie) and Liza Colon-Zayas (Tina) won the supporting award, which later seemed to surpass legends like Meryl Streep and Carol Burnett.

“To all the Latin women who are watching me, keep believing and keep voting – keep voting for your rights,” she said in her acceptance speech.

The high-pressure restaurant drama made headlines when it was nominated again in the comedy category instead of drama.

Veteran actress Smart Jeans prevented The Bear from winning, winning best comedy actress – the sixth Emmy of her career – for Hacks.

In the television categories, Australia Elizabeth Debicki won her first Emmy, best actress, for her role as Princess Diana in the final season of Netflix’s The Crown.

“To be able to play this role based on this extraordinary and incredible human being is a huge honor and a gift for me,” she said.

Billy Crudup won best supporting actor for The Morning Show, while Jodie Foster won best actress in a limited series True Detective: Night Country

Successful British talent includes TV presenter John Oliverwho won best scripted variety series, and Will Smithwho won best screenplay for Slow Horses.

Traitors take over the house Alan Cumming received the show’s award for best reality or competition show. The award came after he was named best host of a reality or competition show at the Creative Arts Emmys, which took place a week before the main awards ceremony.
