Naomi Osaka’s name appeared on the singles list for the Wimbledon Championships, announced by the organizers on Friday, but Roger Federer and the Williams sisters were not included.
Osaka said last month that she was “not 100% sure” that she would participate in a grass-court Grand Slam because of the sport’s governing bodies’ decision to strip the tournament’s ranking points.
Wimbledon has been stripped of points by the ATP and WTA for banning Russian and Belarusian players from this summer’s Grand Slam.
After being eliminated from the French Open, Osaka cast doubt on her presence in SW19.
“I’d say this decision affects my psyche, as if I’m not 100 per cent sure if I’m going to go there,” she told a news conference after the loss.
“I’d love to go just to get some experience on the pitch, but at the same time, for me, it’s like – I don’t mean nonsense, no pun intended, but I’m the player type motivated by … seeing my rankings go up.
“I think the intention is really good, but the implementation is everywhere.”
She added: “I’m not sure why, but I feel like if I play Wimbledon with no points, it’s like an exhibition. I know this isn’t true, right? But my brain just felt that way. Whenever I think something is like an exhibit, I just can’t get into it 100%.”
Serena, Venus and Roger are absent from the list of contestants
Meanwhile, seven-time Wimbledon singles champion Serena Williams and her sister Venus, five-time All England Club singles champion, are also absent from the roster.
Serena hasn’t competed on the Tour since an injury in her first match at the Wimbledon Championships last year forced her to withdraw, Venus’ last appearance being at the WTA 250 event in Chicago in August. last year.
Eight-time champion Roger Federer, who hasn’t competed since coming out of the quarter-finals at Wimbledon last year, was also not on the list.
Federer underwent another knee surgery last year and his coach said in March that a return at Wimbledon was unlikely for the 20-time champion.
The wildcards for the Grand Slam, which runs from June 27 to July 10, have yet to be announced.
