Wilder breaks incredible punch record in KO win over Helenius
Deontay Wilder returned to her ring on Saturday after more than a year and made an emphatic statement, leaving Robert Helenius chilling in the first round. Wilder also set a new record with the win.
The ‘Bronze Bomber’ broke the record for the least number of punches to achieve a heavyweight knockout with just… three. Shocking.
It’s not certain if he’ll be back in the ring after their KO loss to Tyson Fury in their three-part fight, but Wilder showed no rush to put Helenius to sleep at the end of the first season. The 2008 Olympic bronze medalist was emotional after the match as he expressed concern for Helenius’ health.
“I always care about all the boxers”
Showing his support for Helenius, he said:
“I am a big supporter of boxers because, as I always say, boxing is not a sport. A sport is something you play. You don’t play this. We risk our lives for your entertainment and I say that forever.”
Team Helenius later released an update, positively confirming that his medical examination was complete with no cause for concern. That was after he hinted at retirement in a conversation with Wilder while the two met and embraced after the battle.
For the former WBC king, who successfully defended his belt ten times between 2015 and 2019, his short-term future remains uncertain.
Wilder linked to fights with Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk during fight week and said he would be available to anyone in the post-war interview but it looks like the WBC will call a final knockout between him and Andy Ruiz Jr for the Tyson Fury heavyweight title which will take place in early 2023.
