Widow of freedom fighter gets relief | India News
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of Uttarakhand on Thursday overturned a 2018 state government order denying subsidies to Mohini Deviwidow of a freedom fighter, citing a 2014 rule that provides benefits only to dependents of those who have served more than two months in prison. Devi, 80 years old, lost her husband MD Kabdal in 1978.
Her lawyer presented documents to prove Kabdal was sentenced to one day in jail and fined Rs 20. Although there are no documents to suggest that he was jailed, HC said that it can be assumed he was sent to prison because there is no documentation that Kabdal has recovered.
“It’s painful to see dependents freedom fighters whose sacrifice set us free … waited decades for their pensions,” the court said.
