Why you might want to be an AAA member even if you don’t have a car

The American Automobile Association, or “Triple-A,” is known for its roadside assistance. But it also offers other discounts that might be worth the membership, even if you don’t own a car.

The cost of the basic annual membership varies by region, ranging from $38 to $74, and comes with many lesser-known perks that can save you money on things you might already have. purchases, including discounts on shopping, restaurants and entertainment.

Membership will cover towing costs, emergency refueling, starter battery replacement, and locksmith service in case you lock the keys inside your vehicle. Plus and Premier plans are more expensive, as they offer enhanced roadside perkssuch as emergency and extended range car rental services.

However, all packages will qualify you for receipt of AAA Other discounts. Here are a few highlights:

  • Up to 30% off Hilton, Hyatt and Marriott hotel rooms. However, the discount rate can vary, and is usually closer to 5% to 10%.
  • Up to 20% off Hertz, Thrifty or Dollar Car rentals
  • More than 30% off on electronics brands like HP, Samsung and Dell
  • Up to 50% off prescription lenses and 30% off eye exams
  • Up to 50% off admission to select theme parks and 20% off or more on movie and theater tickets

AAA memberships are divided into regions in the US, and each region may offer its own perks or discounts. For example, the AAA Northeast is currently offering 30% off select printing services at UPS, 12% off Penske truck rentals, and 15% off home security.

Some AAA branches also provide a driver license renewal service for members, which is very convenient for those who need upgrade to a real ID-compliant driver’s license or state ID card by the May 2023 deadline.

Of course, whether a membership is really worth the cost will depend on your spending habits. If these discounts apply to things you’ve already paid for, an AAA membership could be worth it for you, even if you don’t own a car.
