MANILA, Philippines — The Premier Volleyball League kicks off the 2023 season with the all-new All-Filipino Conference, formerly known as the Open Conference.

After using the Open Conference as the name of the tournament exclusively for Filipino players for the past six years, Sports Vision, the organizer of the tournament, has decided to rename it the All-Filipino Conference starting in 2023.

“The reason why we changed the title of the Conference to All Filipinos is because ‘Only Filipinos’ and ‘Foreigners’ are allowed to participate in this Conference,” PVL Tournament Director Tonyboy Liao said. with Inquirer Sports.

“If it’s called Open, it’s like other nationalities can play. To make it more clear we named it [All-Filipino] Conference,” he added.

Open conference history

Sports Vision is the group that founded Shakey’s V-League — the predecessor to PVL — in 2004, as an avenue for women’s college volleyball teams. The league then referred to its tournaments as the First and Second Conferences.

But in its eighth season, the V-League made its Conference Open debut in 2011 with participating armies and clubs. Since then, the league has featured more club teams, paving the way for the Import Boost Conference, which opened in 2014 during its 11th season.

After 13 seasons, V-League changed its name to PVL in 2017 and debuted as a professional league in 2021. All the top club teams in the country entered the tournament with Chery Tiggo Becomes First Professional Champion in Conference Opens Inside the Ilocos Norte Bubble.

Although PVL’s first Conference will now be called the All-Filipino Conference, Sports Vision is still using the Open Conference for Spikers’ Turf, which begins the 2023 season on Sunday.

Tournament Format

The All-Filipino Conference, which opens on February 4, will have a different tournament format this season with nine clubs: Creamline, Petro Gazz, Cignal, Choco Mucho, PLDT, F2 Logistics, Chery Tiggo, Akari and Army clash in a match. Round-robin competition will select the top 4 teams to advance to the semi-finals.

Just like in the Boost Conference, the remaining four teams will compete in a one-round round-robin with the top two teams setting up a series of three Grand Finals, while the third and fourth seeds clash in the finals. a separate series of matches for the bronze medal.

In the 2022 Open Conference, nine teams are divided into two groups with the top four teams from each group playing against each other in the quarter-finals to determine the semi-finalists. Creamline sweeps all eight of its games to dominate last season’s inaugural tournament.

After the All-Philippines Conference, PVL will host the second edition of the Invitationals in June and will conclude the season with the Import Enhancement Conference in October.
