Why The BJP Seems Invincible These Days

July 21 will go down in history as a great day for democracy. The day a tribal woman was chosen as the President of India. Droupadi Murmu is not only the country’s second female President but also the first tribal woman to become the first Citizen.

Whether she proves to be a dynamic President or merely a rubber stamp will be decided in five years. Yashwant Sinha, despite a long, famous and successful career in politics, lost the battle. His defeat was a given. The BJP under Prime Minister Narendra Modi had the numbers to win easily. The opposition once again faces some fundamental questions.

The word masterstroke is a widely used word in the Modi era, by BJP supporters and their friends in the media. So much so that it has lost its meaning.

But the selection of Droupadi Murmu as the candidate underscores the strategic thinking within the BJP and the desire to win every election war, convincingly, to convey the invincibility – of the party as well as its role. its top leadership.

Yashwant Sinha is an excellent candidate who has proven himself to be an extremely talented minister under Atal Bihari Vajpayee. But in a changed and highly polarized political scenario, he is not the ideal candidate. In a certain age, he will be an excellent candidate for the top spot. But not in today’s politics and here the folly of the entire opposition.

Yashwant Sinha lost to Droupadi Murmu in the Presidential race.

This is the age of identity politics and Droupadi Murmu’s choice is a political message. It was an attempt by the BJP to reach out to tribal communities to gain electoral benefits. Since Modi took the helm of the BJP, the party has continuously tried to expand its reach into territories that have never had any presence.

Before 2014, the BJP had a strong cadre, ideology, and organization, but it was still called an elite party. In Modi’s view, the BJP has further consolidated upper caste votes, especially in northern India. According to a survey by CSDS (Center for the Study of Developing Societies), more than 85% of the upper class, especially Brahmins, currently vote for the BJP.

But it is its deep penetration into the OBC and Dalit communities that has made the BJP such a force to be reckoned with. In the recent Uttar Pradesh elections, Mayawati’s virtual annihilation of the BSP and the shift of a majority of votes from non-Jatav Dalit to the BJP is evidence.

Despite the good performance of the Samajwadi Party, the BJP gained gains among the “non-Yadav” votes. The BJP in UP was facing opposition, but they won a majority and the Samajwadi party came in second despite improving its share of the vote to 10%. This was made possible because the BJP reached out to new voters among women, Dalits and OBC. It is no coincidence that Droupadi Murmu is a tribe and she belongs to Odisha.

The BJP knew that in addition to the northern states of India, the BJP had to explore new lands in West Bengal and Orissa.

In the last parliamentary and congress elections in West Bengal, the BJP emerged as the main opposition party, destroying the Left and Congress parties. This is the state where the BJP has a negligible presence before 2014. After Bengal, the next target of the BJP is Odisha. The BJP knows Naveen Patnaik has won the last five elections and is not young anymore. The BJP wants to throw a serious challenge to Naveen Patnaik, like it did to Mamata Banerjee in Bengal. It is also aimed at tribal voters in Jharkhand, Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

It can be argued that just because the BJP is President Droupadi Murmu does not mean tribal voters will automatically switch to the BJP.

Droupadi Murmu has accumulated 53.13% of the total vote value after three rounds of counting votes.

Ramnath Kovind becoming President does not mean that Dalit’s votes magically transfer to the BJP but what does show is a knack for strategic thinking, a desire to conquer new frontiers, a craving for votes. additional voting and the instinct to win elections.

In a country as large as ours, the political message is very important. The selection of a tribal candidate after a Dalit president sent the message that the BJP was no longer an elite party; it cares about the marginalized and is committed to empowering them.

So, Droupadi Murmu has a USP, albeit a “lightweight candidate”, and Yashwant Sinha fails, in a time of haunting identity politics. He was a good candidate but at the wrong time.

That was the crux of the opposition’s failure to deliver a respectable fight against the BJP. During the presidential election, the opposition faithfully repeated its mistakes.

Its shortcoming lies in the fact that at the national level it has not been able to read Modi’s mind; it was impossible to predict his political moves; and it was mostly caught napping.

Modi brought in Murmu and it rattled many opposition parties. JMM, one of Yashwant Sinha’s big name supporters, voted for Murmu; Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena also changed his mind. Even Mamata Banerjee was forced to admit that if she had known about Murmu’s candidacy, she wouldn’t have suggested Yashwant Sinha’s name.

It’s unfortunate that a candidate like Yashwant Sinha cannot garner more votes and is unable to challenge the BJP and the parties that support it. Not even a little bit. But if the opposition presents a strong OBC candidate or a Dalit, it will manage some sort of political message. The OBC and Dalit leaders and class-based parties during the ruling period will be hard to ignore.

To counter Modi, the opposition must restart, must reformat its political software. The world has changed. Modi has changed the rules of the game, but the opposition still lives in the past.

Unlike before, politics today is a 24/7 game played in a giant open arena. People watching the match like their instinctive gladiators who fight to the end and leave no stone behind. In the world of polarizing links, there is no such thing as a symbolic war.
