A 2021 report by Lord Dyson concludes that Mr. Bashir “seriously violated” the principles by falsifying bank statements to gain access to Lord Spencer, Diana’s brother, thereby persuading her to do the interview.

Mr Bashir, who was seriously ill at the time, was disgraced and the BBC was forced to apologize.

Prince William and Prince Harry issued statements condemning the broadcaster, saying: “It is with great sadness to learn that the BBC’s failures have significantly contributed to fear, paranoia and her isolation that I remember from my last years with her.”

Ahead of the premiere, The Mail on Sunday reported that season five included Prince Charles having a conversation with then-Prime Minister Sir John Major about the possibility of succeeding his mother as king.

Charles allegedly told the Prime Minister that his mother, 65 at the time, was repeating Queen Victoria’s mistakes by not letting him take over soon.

Sir John, who is close to the royal family, said through his spokesman: “Sir John is not cooperating in any way with The Crown.

“He has also never been approached by them to fact-check any script material in this or any other film.

“There was never any discussion between Sir John and the then Prince of Wales about any possibility of the late Queen Elizabeth II abdicating.”

Past seasons have alluded to infidelity rumors, but nothing has ever been certain.

Dickie Arbiter, who served as the Queen’s press secretary from 1998 to 2000, said the plot, shortly after the Queen’s death, was “regrettable”.

“The truth is that Penny is a longtime family friend. Netflix doesn’t care about people’s feelings,” he said.

Dame Judi Dench, a friend of King Charles, recently wrote an open letter in The Times urging the streaming service to regulate it as a “fictional drama”.

“It’s time for Netflix to reconsider – for the sake of a family and a country that he recently lost, out of respect for a king who served his people so thoughtfully in the past. 70 years and to preserve its reputation in the eyes of its UK registrants,” she said.

Although season five makes no mention of Diana’s death in 1997, the cast and crew are currently filming season six.

Netflix confirmed in a statement that it will not be showing the fatal car crash – but only “covering scenes before and after”.
