Why global smartphone shipments are down 9%

According to the latest Canalys market report, globally smartphone Shipments fell 9% in the second quarter of 2022. The report also adds that despite the decline, SAMSUNG won the top spot with 21% market share. Apple followed the Korean tech giant with 17% market share.
The reason why global smartphone shipments are down
The report adds that global smartphone shipments fell due to two main reasons – supply outstripping demand and high inflation. Research analyst Canalys Runar Bjørhovde said, “Economic difficulties, sluggish demand and a build-up of inventories have resulted in suppliers having to rapidly reevaluate their portfolio strategies. for the remainder of 2022. The surplus mid-range segment is an exposed segment for vendors to focus on tailoring new product launches, such as budget-constrained consumers shift their device purchases to the lower segment”.
Top five companies
As mentioned above, Samsung has emerged as the leader in global smartphone shipments with a 21% market share. The report adds that Samsung has managed to maintain its top spot by beefing up its entry-level Galaxy A smartphone lineup.
Second on the list is Apple with 17% market share. In Q2 2021, the Cupertino-based tech giant had a 14% market share and now it has grown to 17%. The report shows that Apple has seen this growth due to increasing demand for the iPhone 13.
The third, fourth and fifth places are captured by Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo corresponding. The report adds that all three brands are seeing a struggle in China, suffering double-digit declines to capture 14%, 10% and 9% market share, respectively.
