While the Conservatives co-organised Alyssa Farah Griffin talked about potential policies (such as training, background checks, and mental health checks) that would help with a purchase deadly assault weapon, such as the harder AR-15, Whoopi quickly interrupted. “Why do we compromise?” Whoopi said. “I’m tired of trying to justify the fact that you can keep 75 guns in the house. I’m tired of trying to figure out how to say: listen, we have rules and regulations.”
As Whoopi continued, she compared it to having a driver’s license, saying she wanted a record of every gun people own. “When will it go far enough? When will people realize that it’s true what you said: I must have a driver’s license. It is not a compromise. We do not discuss it. You either get a license, or you go to jail. So to me, you want the 7011 gun? We need to know that. We need to know what you got, because you’re now being painted like all the people who are legally gun killers,” she said.
Whoopi called for assault weapons, which were banned from 1994 to 2004, noting how they have no practical effect compared to other firearms. “I don’t have a tank. I can’t go buy a tank,” she said. “The AR-15 is not used in normal everyday life. Do not have. “
While she says she doesn’t want gun owners to have to get rid of each gun, she wants a record of who owns what. “I am not saying give up all your guns. Whoopi is an outspoken advocate for gun safety. After the Supreme Court overturned a New York law requiring people to give “good cause” for concealment, the actress called the ruling a “middle finger with New York” in an episode in June 2022. “We were trying to figure out how to handle all that was going on in this city, especially with gun laws, and it made you wonder: What does this mean? Are we telling people, ‘Yes, you can come to this city and hide your weapons’? And now the police have to find out who is carrying and who is not and who is allowed to do so? It’s crazy,” she said at the time.
