A rescue mission is underway off the coast of Sicily after the British-flagged superyacht Bayesian sank in rough weather early on Monday morning.

According to Sicily’s civil protection agency, a man, the ship’s cook, died and his body has been found.

About 15 people were rescued from the boat, while six people are still missing.

Professional divers from the Italian fire service resumed the search early Tuesday morning.

Who is missing?

Five of the six missing people have been named.

According to La Repubblica, the six missing people include four British nationals and two Americans.

The Italian newspaper Il Giornale di Sicilia reported that most of the passengers on board were British, along with people from New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Ireland and Anglo-French nationals.

Some of those on board worked at the recent trial of British businessman Mike Lynch, who was acquitted of fraud charges in the United States.

It is understood the cruise was to celebrate Mr Lynch’s acquittal.

Mr Lynch is a technology entrepreneur once considered by some to be the “Britain’s Bill Gates”.

Raised in Essex, he attended Cambridge University before co-founding software company Autonomy in 1996.

The 59-year-old made his fortune by selling the company to US tech giant Hewlett-Packard in 2011 for $11bn (£8.6bn).

Mr Lynch has been embroiled in a decade-long legal battle since the acquisition. He was acquitted in the US in June of multiple fraud charges, for which he faced up to two decades in prison.

In August, he told BBC Radio 4 he believed he could only prove his innocence in a US court because he was rich enough to pay the huge legal fees involved.

“You don’t need money to protect yourself as a British citizen,” he said.

Hannah Lynch, student

Mr Lynch was accompanied by his daughter Hannah, who is also missing.

The 18-year-old is believed to be the younger of Mr Lynch’s two daughters.

She has just completed her A-levels and won a place to study English at Oxford University, according to the Times.

His biography on the firm’s website says he served as an assistant attorney general for the Southern District of New York from 1999 to 2005.

During his tenure, he was involved in criminal investigations related to the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center.

The 70-year-old Briton studied at Imperial College London and has previously served on the boards of several companies.

Mr Bloomer appeared in court as a defence witness for Mr Lynch, according to the Financial Times. Media reports said the pair were close friends.

Aki Hussain, chief executive of Hiscox Group, of which Mr Bloomer has been chairman since 2023, said: “We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event.

“We extend our condolences to all those affected, especially chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy, who are among those missing.”

Judy Bloomer, trustee and supporter of the charity

The charity’s chief executive, Athena Lamnisos, said she was “deeply shocked to hear that our dear friend and husband, Jonathan, was among those missing”.

“Our condolences go out to Judy and Jonathan’s families, as well as to all those still waiting for news following this tragic event,” she added in a statement.

Who was rescued?

Among the 15 people rescued were nine crew members of the cruise ship.

This means that all members of the crew have been found except the chef, who local authorities say is dead.

Eight of the 15 people rescued were taken to hospital.

A British mother, named as Charlotte Golunski, was on a yacht with her partner and young daughter. All three were rescued from the boat.

In an interview, she described holding her newborn daughter in the sea to save her from drowning.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Ms. Golunski is a partner at Mr. Lynch’s firm Invoke Capital, where she has worked since 2012.

The Times reported that she previously worked for Autonomy, the company at the center of Mr Lynch’s recent lawsuit.

Another lawyer, Ayla Ronald, is also said to have been rescued.

The New Zealand citizen worked for Clifford Chance, where Mr Morvillo was a partner, and was part of Mr Lynch’s legal team at his trial in June.

her father told the Telegraph that she was “invited on a cruise following her recent success in a US court case”.

He said she texted him to say she and her partner were still alive, without elaborating.

According to La Repubblica newspaper, on Monday, Ms. Bacares had to use a wheelchair after suffering scratches on her leg.
