Who are the Pandoles, Cyrus Mistry's Companion: 10 Facts

Cyrus Mistry and a family friend, Jahangir Pandole, died in a car crash

New Delhi:
Cyrus Mistry, the former Chairman of Tata Sons, died in a car crash while en route from Udwada of Gujarat to Mumbai. He was accompanied by three other family friends, brothers Darius and Jehangir Pandole, and Darius Pandole’s wife Anahita Pandole.

Here is your 10th scorecard for this big story:

  1. Cyrus Mistry and Pandoles went to Udwada, where Parsis has their main “Temple of Fire”, to pray for the Pandole brothers’ father, who had just passed away. The accident happened while they were returning. The Udwada Fire Temple has been restored over the past few years at a very high cost, entirely borne by the Mistry family. It fully reopened about a year ago.

  2. The car was driven by Anahita Pandole, a top gynecologist at Mumbai’s Beach Candy Hospital. Darius Pandole sat in the front passenger seat. Both were seriously injured and are recovering in hospital.

  3. Mr Mistry sat in the back seat with Jehangir Pandole, brother of Darius Pandole. Both did not survive.

  4. Darius Pandole, 60 years old, is the CEO and Managing Director of JM Financial Private Equity based in Mumbai. He is also an independent director of Tata group companies and has opposed the removal of Cyrus Mistry as Chairman of Tata Sons. He resigned when Cyrus Mistry was removed.

  5. The Pandale family owns Duke’s, a maker of soft drinks like Mangola. They sold the business to Pepsi over 20 years ago. One of the two brothers who sold the business to Pepsi was Dinshaw Pandole – the father of Darius and Jehangir Pandole. Dinshaw Pandole passed away last week.

  6. Police said the crash was caused by speeding near Palghar, about 100 kilometers from Mumbai. But a detailed investigation will be done to get a fuller picture. Police said CCTV cameras along the route would be checked.

  7. The remains of Cyrus Mistry and Jehangir Pandole will be taken to Mumbai’s JJ Hospital, where an autopsy will be carried out.

  8. Anahita and Darius Pandole are likely to be taken to Breach Candy Hospital today.

  9. Anahita Pandole, 55, has been involved in a campaign against illegal hoarding and her name has made headlines in connection with it. She is also one of the founders of Jio Parsi, an initiative to curb population decline in the Parsi community.

  10. Cyrus Mistry, 54, who succeeded Ratan Tata as Chairman of Tata Sons, the parent company of the $300 billion conglomerate, was sacked in a board coup in 2016. It caused a protracted legal controversy, which took place in Tata in favor of the group at the Supreme Court.
