If you’re looking to add some “wow” to a room, have you ever thought about making a wallpaper wall? When we moved into our current house, I planned to turn the third bedroom into my office because I work from home.
This area was once an outdoor patio at some point. It’s a room two steps smaller than the rest of the house, so the ceilings are nice and high.
The room is located right next to the stairs going down to the basement so from the rest of the house it is possible to see right into the room. I wanted to do something fun and tie the room to how the rest of the house felt.
An accent wall seemed like the perfect way to add some personality to a space, and a wallpaper accent wall turned out to be perfect for the room!
If you’re wondering when to wallpaper an accent wall, here are all the ways to figure out what’s the best route for you!
Q: Which wall should be the accent wall?
A: Usually, an accent wall is defined by which is the first/main wall you see when entering the room. You want that “WOW” moment when you walk into the room, so you should let that be the first thing you see.
The exception to that general rule would be the bedroom, as you’ll often want to choose the wall the bed rests on (where the headboard is located) for your feature wall.
Q: What type of wallpaper is best for an accent wall?
ONE: Types of wallpapers Which you choose will depend on how bold a statement you want to make with your accent wall. If you want to be bold and dramatic, choose wallpaper with lots of patterns or colors to really draw the eye for that wall. If you want something more subtle, try a more muted palette with fewer colors or textures.
You should stick an accent wall when…
... When on a wallpaper budget: By this, I don’t necessarily mean that you want to decorate a room in general as cheaply as possible (usually wallpaper is not suitable for super low budgets unless you do Super affordable DIY wallpaper hack), but you love wallpaper (but don’t have the budget to do the whole room).
All in all, an accent wall will cost about a quarter of the cost of building an entire room, so definitely an overall saving but you’ll get a piece of paper you love. prefer.
… When learning how to make your own wallpaper: Like most skills you’re learning, it can be a good idea to start small and build up as you grow your toolkit. So if you’re looking to do the wallpaper treatment yourself (which is doable for a crafty person and saves you on installation costs), I highly recommend doing an accent wall first. when trying to do the whole room.
You don’t have to worry about trying to wrap the pattern around the corners the same way you would if you did the whole room, and it gives you a little more space to learn the skill. You can also define what you will do differently next time, what tools will be more useful, or what kind of paper you want to work with next time.
… When some walls in the room have challenges: By “challenging” I mean some other walls that may be oddly shaped, be much taller than others, have lots of nooks and crannies, or have other features or details that make wallpapering difficult. or confused.
Keeping the paper on one accent wall means you don’t have to face the challenges that other walls in the room may have, where wallpaper might not be a good idea.
… When the model is “too much” for the whole room: Some wallpaper patterns are super busy and full (which is probably what you like about the paper in the first place), but you may not feel like you can handle that pattern’s entire room.
Making a wall stand out with wallpaper is a great way to add some awesome pattern that you love without feeling like you’ll get dizzy as you walk around the room.
TIP: Want your wallpaper accent wall to look more integrated into the entire room? Try painting other walls to match the main background color of your wallpaper (the same way my walls are white and my wallpaper’s main background is also white).
This allows adjacent walls to merge into the wallpaper rather than feeling like a difficult transition (though that can look dramatic in a great way, so you can decide which one you want).

The reason it’s an “accent” wall is because it’s such a distinctive feature in the room, so having two walls in your space as your accent wall will just feel confusing. Either do a wall or an entire room. However, you can have more than one accent in your home as long as they are in different rooms.
Nothing! You can paint a different color for the accent wall or a different texture like wood or wall cladding. Paint color will be the easiest thing to change in the future (although you can make mobile wallpaper) and traditional wallpapers. A wooden wall will take a lot more work (albeit subject to change) a few years later.
