WhatsApp is working on a notification shortcut to block senders with just one tap on Android: Report

WhatsApp, the popular cross-platform instant messaging service is said to be developing a feature to better handle spam messages received by users. The Meta-owned messaging service was recently spotted testing the ability to block contacts from chat lists. Now, the app is said to be developing a new feature in the form of a blocking shortcut that will allow Android users to block unknown senders right from the notification bar. Currently, WhatsApp notifications on Android appear with two options: reply and mark as read.

According to a recent report report by the WABetaInfo feature tracker, WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will allow users to block people who are not in their contact list, right from the notification bar. This means that users will soon be able to block unknown and untrusted contacts without opening the chat. Currently, WhatsApp message notifications have two options: reply and mark as read.

WABetaInfo also shared a screenshot of the upcoming feature where a WhatsApp message notification is displayed for a third option: Block. According to the report, the feature will only be available for messages received from unknown senders.

If this feature is implemented, users will not need to open WhatsApp chats to block someone. This functionality is still under development and will likely be released in a future update, making blocking unknown and unwanted contacts, especially from spam and phishing accounts, become quick and easy.

Meanwhile, instant messaging apps have also been discovered work on the new reporting status update feature for Android, allowing users to report any unwanted status updates that violate company regulations terms of service. Reported status updates will be forwarded to the company for moderation. There will be a new ‘report’ option for status updates in the status section.

Status updates are reported to be end-to-end encrypted (E2EE), similar to messages, voice calls, media, and location sharing. E2EE-protected content cannot be accessed by any third parties, or even WhatsApp or Meta, according to feature trackers.
