WhatsApp is developing a feature that allows users to set expiration dates for group chats, saving space: Report

WhatsApp has been spotted developing a feature that helps users reclaim precious storage space on their smartphones. The instant messaging app is developing a feature that allows users to set an expiration date for group chats. The latest beta of the WhatsApp for iOS update contains references to this upcoming feature, but the Meta-owned messaging service has yet to officially announce its plans to roll out the feature.
The feature called ‘Group Expiration’ will allow users to set an expiration date for their bucket. Users can choose to delete the group within a day, a week, or even set a custom date so that WhatsApp groups no longer exist, according to report by the WABetaInfo feature tracker.
In the screenshot of the feature shared by WABetaInfo, the group chat settings are shown including a new Expired group The settings will allow the user to choose from the three options mentioned above. A fourth optionRemove expiration datewill disable any previously set expiration dates for the group.
According to the screenshot, WhatsApp will prompt the user to clean up the group on the expiration date. This suggests that the feature will not be an automated process, unlike disappearing chats. Meanwhile, choose to associate the end date with WhatsApp group — may not affect other team members.
The messaging app owned by Meta can hold up to 1,024 members in each group chat. Some messages and attachments shared in a group can quickly fill up a user’s available memory.
WhatsApp’s ‘Expired Groups’ feature, expected to appear on both Android and iOS versions of the app, could help users better manage their phone’s storage by clearing group chats frequent.
When the selected expiration date for the group chat is reached, they will be prompted by WhatsApp to download any important content from the chats and then delete the chat, according to the feature tracker.
Currently, this feature is not available to beta users for testing on the latest WhatsApp beta versions for iOS and Android. WhatsApp has yet to announce details on when to release this feature to all users.
The platform is also working on the ability silence unknown caller and also sign up for a WhatsApp newsletter.
