What to Expect as Britain Mourns Queen Elizabeth
The The Queen’s funeral has been set for September 19, but Britain will spend this week remembering and mourning the country’s longest-reigning monarch. On Monday, the queen’s coffin was driven down the Royal Mile, a major route through Edinburgh’s Old Town, to St. Giles for prayers and vigils. The Queen will rest at the cathedral overnight.
Here’s what to expect in the coming days.
Tuesday
The queen’s coffin will be loaded onto a Royal Air Force jet to be transported to Northolt Air Force Base in west London. It will be loaded into a state hearse and driven to Buckingham Palace, arriving at around 8pm, when it will be placed on a truss in the ballroom.
Wednesday
At 2:22pm, the queen’s coffin, decorated with royal crowns and a wreath, will be delivered by gun carriage in a quiet procession from Buckingham Palace, past the Mall and through the Guards Parade, make your way to Westminster Hall in the Palace of Westminster.
Following the blessing of the archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, the queen will be in state at Westminster Hall for four days.
Monday, September 19
The queen’s coffin will again be moved to nearby Westminster Abbey, where a funeral will be held at 11am. Presidents, princes and prime ministers from around the world will attend.
