With this set being perhaps the first of a new Lego Zelda line, Team NL sat down to ponder what other Hyrulean places and personalities could make for epic Lego sets in the future…
Kokiri Forest & Lost Forest (Gavin Lane, editor)
I’m still shocked that Nintendo didn’t insist on some quirky new innovations with the Animal Crossing and Zelda sets, but I’m also happy to see this following the lead of the NES and Mario 64 ‘?’ Focus on adults. Block.
My mind immediately went to Ocarina. Temple of Time would be fine, but the OoT version isn’t very interesting – I’d rather see a Forest Temple diorama with images battle with Phantom Ganondorf or in Lost Woods with Skull Kid on tree stump with light bricks creating a highlight for Link’s Ocarina solo. An Epona character is a no-brainer, with several Lon Lon Farm fences to jump, along with Malon, Talon and Ingo minifigures. And what about clock tower from Majora’s Mask with an ominous Moon looming overhead?
In fact, seeing Link’s House included in the Deku set and hearing Ollie complain about the lack of a Mido character made me think of Character-based expansion pack for the Kokiri Forest arc, also. These will be more affordable mini kits with the Kokiri minifigure and landscape detail. A little Mido guarding the dome leading to the Deku Tree, a girl sitting in a shop saying ‘Hello!’, a guy struggling in a ring of stones, a Saria waving at some grass filled with Rupees or something there.
There’s no shortage of ideas for larger sets, but I’d like to see something smaller, too. I’m also looking forward to seeing what the Ganondorf minifigure will look like.
Dragon Island (Ollie Reynolds, editor)
I was curious to see how Wind Waker’s unique art style would translate to Lego, but when I started thinking about potential sets, I immediately decided Dragon Island. Now, I’m under no illusions that something like this would cost a huge amount of money, but my God, it would be amazing. Therefore cool.
Just imagine it, a complete Lego replica of the island’s underworld, complete with palm trees, bomb flowers, a swirling plume of smoke atop a volcano, and of course, Great Valoo himself. With minifigures, you can have Link, some Rito tribe members, Chuchus, Kargarocs, and even the God of Wind, Zephos. And of course, you need to have some kind of speaker to play the iconic Roost Island theme tune. Well, this thing would probably cost at least £500…
But, you know what, I would choose the Lego version of Wind Waker boss Gohma battle. That thing is so weird.
Four Giants (Alana Hagues, deputy editor)
Yes, this is very ambitious, I know, but I wanted my idea to be a little crazy. I also want the Temple of Time from OoT, mind you, but I’ll settle for the sheer insanity that would be the Four Titans, trying to keep the Moon from falling.
The guardian deities of Termina are central figures in Majora’s mask, and there are few more iconic images from that game than the four of them preventing the Moon from destroying the land. Honestly, this will be one of those builds that doesn’t have too many gimmicks – but it will be a complex build. Four buildable giants – each person has one Miniature version of the mask that you must obtain to free them – and a big moonmaybe half a moon to keep costs down.
Other things you can get with this are minifigures of Link, Skull Kid (although I hope we all saw it This awesome Skull Kid build from a few years ago), The Happy Mask Salesman or The Moon Children.Perhaps, if the Moon were only half a moon, The flat surface can be a location with a tree in the center.
Rito Village (Jim Norman, editor)
In fact, there isn’t a single Zelda location, item, or character that I do not want to see it made from Lego. So I tried to be realistic about this. Zora’s domain name? Too wet. Small village? Too small. Kara Kara Market? Too much sand (rough, rough and unpleasant). But Rito Village is a set I can imagine.
Just picture it: a vertical building with a perch-shaped rock in the center, winding steps with houses (sleeping places?) on the side, and enough detail to fill Hyrule Historia three times. Lean into the BOTW theme and give us a Paraglider for the Link minifigure. Oh my God, there could be a Kass character! With a little accordion! This idea is gradually gaining more traction.
However, what is most likely to hurt my bank balance would be a series of display items such as LEGO helmet line, Infinity Gauntletor Star Wars. My shelves have buckled under the pressure of the models I currently own, but I’m sure I can squeeze in Master Sword, Hylian Shield or Ocarina in detail. After all, I’m already an adult.
