An offensive soldier has never won the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Was that a tragedy? Or does it make sense? Offensive line-ups rarely score touchdowns, pick up yards, or do Griddy (although a few have tried). That said, they has proven to be one of the most valuable assets a team can invest in. New Dolphins left-hander Terron Armstead makes a whopping $15 million a year on his new contract. 49ers left-hander Trent Williams makes $23 million a year. David Bakhtiari? $23 million more. They can get expensive. That’s where the rookies come in.
Long has NFL mining rookies. Since you don’t know what they can do, you don’t have to pay them as much as your veterans. While that trend is changing recently (Lions rookie Aidan Hutchinson has 30th highest salary in the NFL already), that’s still how some NFL teams try to build foundations in teams that are as important as their offensive line. The talented o-linemen on their rookie contracts are some of the most valuable assets in the NFL. Whether it’s Bucs’ Tristan Wirfs ($4 million median salary), Chargers’ Rashawn Slater ($4.16 million), Chiefs’ Creed Humphrey ($1.4 million), or Patriots’ Mike Onwenu ($874,369) , young, low-paid attackers who have proven time and time again to be invaluable to their franchise. So why can’t they win Rookie of the Year?
Even players attacking the All-Pro doubt that day will come. In an interview with OddsChecker US, former Bengals left-hander Willie Anderson says that the attacking minions no longer get the respect they deserve. They are no longer stars to casual fans, and their charm began when John Madden stopped calling the game.
“The death of the attackers’ popularity was when John Madden stopped calling games. John Madden has become offensive line stars because he and his crew are highlighting and talking about it,” Anderson stated. “Now that people are announcing these games and being hired by these networks where are the old players going to play? Since 2010, we’ve seen six different offensive pros receive votes for the Offensive Rookie of the Year award (Maurkice Pouncey, Larry Warford, Zack Martin, Quenton Nelson, Creed Humphrey, Rashawn Slater ). Anderson stated that offensive athletes were recognized for their work in the ’80s, “Maybe in the ’80s that was true, but these guys are high-level athletes. ” However, for the entire decade of the 1980s, only four attacking midfielders received votes for MVP, Attacking Player of the Year or Attacking Rookie of the Year – 1981 Anthony Muñoz (OPOY), 1985 Bill Fralic (OROY), 1987 Bruce Armstrong (OROY), and 1987 Harris Barton (OROY). I know that’s two years less than the time period I just mentioned, but that pace isn’t far off. If anything, recognition, at least for rookies, has increased.

If anything, at least from what I’ve seen, the recognition for offensive linemen in general has increased in recent years. Analytical sites like Pro Football Focus continually give credit where credit is due. Their recent top 50 ranked player listed 49ers Trent Williams’ tackle as the second-best player in the NFL behind only Aaron Donald of the Rams. In fact, that top 50 ranking includes more attacking midfielders (8) than midfielders (6). You could argue that’s obviously going to happen since there are five times more team O quarterbacks in the NFL than there are quarterbacks, but I think it’s still a huge step in the right direction.
I totally agree that offensive liners don’t get the credit they deserve in today’s NFL. However, I believe the fans are returning to the big boys. It’s a slow burn, but still a burn. Considering the fact that six offensive defenders were also drafted ahead of this year’s first quarterfinals, 2022 could be a season where AP voters start looking into the trenches. Still a long time and the odds reflect that. According to OddsChecker, not a single offensive rookie ranks in the top 40 rookies for implied odds as Rookie of the Year. The best odds are currently given to Ravens center Tyler Linderbaum (+15000), his 43rd. The Giants of Evan Neal, Ikem Ekwonu of the Panthers, and Charles Cross of the Seahawks are all offered at +20000, ranked 45.
There will come a day when the stars line up and everyone gets, runs backwards, and the drafted quarterback just doesn’t live up to expectations while a rookie or defender turns into one of the big guys to fear. best in the NFL, right? It must happen eventually. Could it happen this year? Doubtful, but assume that the players with the best odds to win the prize are:
1) A midfielder struggling to land a starting role against Mitch Trubisky
2) A full-back who will be forced to compete with Michael Carter, at least for the first part of the season, and only lost his starting left stroke of the year (although they signed Duane Brown shortly after)
3) A wide ball receiver with Marcus Mariota throwing him the ball
4) A wide receiver who has to compete with an ultimately healthy Michael Thomas for goals
I don’t think an award-winning O-lineman is unnecessary. The Ravens perform a void map-oriented attack. Centers play an important role in the success of that plan. Those are all more reasons for Linderbaum to be recognized if the Ravens’ running game turns out to be elite in 2022. The Seahawks are pitching Drew Lock or Geno Smith in midfield and have just lost full-back Chris Carson. to retire. If their offense is going to do anything, it will have to come from their offensive line creating holes in runs and buying time for passes to pass. Perhaps there was a situation where he could get national attention.
