Week after pay rise talk, Google recruiter loses job while interviewing candidate

NEW DELHI: Expecting a raise in what he calls his ‘dream job’, a Google HR staff panicked when they found out they were fired by the tech giant while interviewing candidates.
In a widely circulated LinkedIn post, Dan Lanigan ryan says he was blocked from the system during an interview, bringing his 16 months with Google to an ‘abrupt end’.

“Unfortunately, I was fired by Google along with thousands of others last Friday. Just over a year ago I got my dream job at a dream company. I’m walking my dog. Recently, the recruiter called to let me know that I got the role and I almost killed the poor dog I was celebrating so much,” Ryan’s post read.
“Until 16 months later, I didn’t expect it to end so suddenly, when I was calling, I was blocked from the system. My contract has just been extended for 1 year and I was transferred to the Cloud Sales recruitment team ( an area that is seeing strong growth) and just a week ago there was talk of a raise, I was caught off guard.”

While thanking colleagues for support, he called for ‘show’ on the social networking platform, wanting to start work again.
“I will forever be grateful for all that I have learned and all the wonderful people I have had the pleasure of working with. I would like to say thank you to my managers Emma Daly-Ronayne, Marie-Claire Kennedy and Joe Morgan and my friends Yasmeen Hussain and Rocco Sek. Your continued support has been instrumental to my successes,” he said. “I’m willing to work and look forward to taking everything I’ve learned and achieved and put it into my next position, whatever that may be.”

Google’s parents Alphabet Inc recently announced that it is cutting about 12,000 jobs due to “another economic reality,” doubling down on artificial intelligence (AI). Alphabet is facing competition from Microsoftis said to be looking to increase its stake in ChatGPT – a chatbot that answers queries with human-like responses.
The job cuts affect 6% of its workforce, and entail thousands lay off at tech giants including Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O), Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) and Meta Platforms Inc (META.O).
Sundar Pichai, Alphabet’s boss since 2019, said in an employee memo that he takes “full responsibility” for decisions that lead to employee layoffs. Pichai, who recently got paid more tied to performance, said it’s time to “sharpen our focus, restructure our cost base and channel our talent and capital us to our highest priorities,” as Alphabet looks to put its products on more AI, echoing comments from Microsoft that announced job cuts.
