‘We will not be silent when apartheid is carried out against others’ – South Africa
In his speech at the General Assembly’s annual high-level debate, he said, “South Africa’s story demonstrates the enduring role of the United Nations in global affairs. In supporting our struggle, the United Nations has affirmed the principles of United Nations Charter – fundamental human rights, the dignity and worth of every person, and the equal rights of nations large and small.”
With his country’s historic struggle to secure a thriving democracy, President Ramaphosa stressed: “We, South Africans, know what apartheid looked like. [and] We will not remain silent and watch apartheid being carried out against others” in Gaza while Israel continues to collectively punish Palestinians.
He called for a joint effort through the United Nations system and other multinational organizations to end the suffering of civilians and for South Africa to take legal action against Israel through International Court of Justice (International Court of Justice) to win.
“The only lasting solution is the establishment of a Palestinian state coexisting with Israel with East Jerusalem as its capital,” he stressed.
On other issues, he said every effort must be made to bring peace to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, Yemen, Ukraine and the Sahel region, but all require genuine and inclusive representation. Security Council.
“The Security Council must be reformed immediately. It must become more inclusive so that the voices of all nations can be heard and considered.”
“Africa is ready to play its role in building a more secure global order by participating in the work of the United Nations Security Council on the basis of respect and acceptance,” he added.
President Ramaphosa said that as part of the quest for a more secure world order, there needed to be greater cooperation between the United Nations and the African Union to address the root causes of wars on the continent.
