Waymo will add custom-built electric cars by Chinese company Geely to its robotaxi fleet

Future, Waymo’s The robotaxi fleet in the US will have electric vehicles built specifically by the Chinese automaker for service Geely. Alphabet has partnered with Geely to create a version of the recently launched all-electric Zeekr vehicle, built specifically for autonomous ride-hailing. Waymo has detailed and shown a render of the modified EV, designed in Sweden, in a blog post.

It doesn’t have a steering wheel or pedals, as you might expect now from a fully autonomous vehicle – where the traditional cockpit would be a tablet that most likely serves as the navigation system and infotainment. Waymo says it has modified the car and gives it a flat floor for easier entry, generous head and legroom, reclining seats, and an all-around charger. The company will then incorporate its driver technology, which includes software and hardware components such as cameras and sensors, into the vehicle.

Waymo’s current ride-hailing fleet mainly consists of Jaguar I-Paces and Chrysler Pacifica hybrids also modified with its technology. Although it did not specifically mention its vehicles, a spokesperson said TechCrunch that partnering with Geely will not affect their existing partnership. The company also did not mention when passengers will be able to ride the Geely vehicles, only knowing they will be added to its fleet in the US in the coming years.
