Watch: How the color of your baking pan can affect what you bake

Since the pandemic, one pastime that has become popular is baking. People notice an uncanny comfort in the process of baking which is actually one of the simplest ways to cook. All you need to do is combine the ingredients, mix them or fold them up and pop them in the oven for surprisingly delicious results. While the baking process is fairly beginner-friendly and simple, there are a number of factors that can affect how the final product turns out. This includes mixing technique, baking temperature, baking time and whether it is allowed to cool after baking and other factors. But did you know that even the type of baking pan you use can affect your baking? Believe it or not, a blogger illustrated the exact difference between using a dark baking tray and a light baking tray. Watch:

The video was shared on Instagram Reels by @benjaminthebaker, where it garnered 193k views and 15.8k likes. “The type of baking pan you use makes a difference in the final outcome of your dessert,” he explains in the caption. He illustrated the difference with three types of desserts – cookies, cakes, and macaroons. As for cookies, Benjamin explains that cookies baked on a darker tray or pan will have a crispier, browner edge while a light cookie will be softer. Meanwhile, for the pastry, you will have a shorter cake with a rounded edge and browner in the case of a darker pan. Likewise, for marzipan, the edges and corners will be slightly stiffer when baking in a dark tray than on a lighter-colored tray.

Instagram users and bakers were quite intrigued by this insight from Benjamin. Many of them expressed their gratitude to him for sharing his knowledge through his informative videos. “So dark pan for cookies and light pan for macaroons (my personal preference). Will keep this in mind! Thank you, you’re a genius,” one user wrote. “I think the difference is pretty much just the material (eg glass and metal) but now it’s also the metal finish?? Good to know,” another user said.

These aren’t the only interesting baking insights shared by the blogger. He recently shared some tips on how to tell if your cake is baked using a toothpick. According to him, if the toothpick comes out clean – the cake is too dry. A few crumbs on the toothpick means it’s soft and moist. Watch the full video here:
