Warriors’ Draymond Green still deserves big payday after punching Jordan Poole

On the list of things that Draymond Green has instigated, punching the ranks of Jordan Poole, what, like the tall teens? Early 20s? We could write about Green weekly if we wanted to. The guy doesn’t just create the headlines, he literally writes his own. So the news coming out of the Bay Area about this interlude is really not surprising.

He argues with teammates to the point where Steph Curry and Klay Thompson essentially have a system for dealing with his outbursts. (Per Greenthey usually just ignore him until they have to yell at him, and then they move on.)

Whatever potential internal punishment he faces, he may have faced it before, and so is my prediction for the line he crossed. Like Charlie Murphy said of Rick James: He’s a regular in the ranks. This is nothing new for Green and nothing new for sports either.

Looks like the NFL had a fight every day in training camp, and we all know the story of Michael Jordan stabbing Steve Kerr in the face during a hot practice session. This will be Green’s 11th season, and the former Michigan State Spartan probably doesn’t have the time and energy for whatever his teammates and former Michigan Wolverine are spewing out.

Whether it’s around the start of Sparty’s 2-3 football season, Green’s impending contract extension, or who should have been dropped from the Great British Bake Off last week, it won’t. affect the Warriors’ season. The only reason Golden State didn’t win the title in Durant’s final season with the team was because of injury.

The Warriors have gone through a decade through the microscope, and this level of drama isn’t uncommon, especially for Draymond.

Green’s contract extension

NBA Twitter’s rumor that money could be the impetus for change as if NBA players struggling for money were something new. Of course Green wants to get paid with the likes of Tyler Herro signing a four-year, $130 million contract, $25 million less than Green’s career earnings.

Joe Lacob and that front office have shown a willingness to pay the luxury tax to run, so they should be willing to take care of what’s most enduring in their All-Stars and a big part of the campaign. 73-win season, four franchise titles, and six finals appearing in the past eight games.

He should be paid what he deserves, and honestly, he should probably be overpaid. We know about the defence, and nobody has been as flexible and consistent as him on the left side of the ball for the last six, seven seasons. He should have three DPOYs, not Rudy Gobert. The reason Kerr let him in the 4th round of the final was because of attack, not defense.

His 3-point shot rate may be quite high, but the chemistry between him, Steph and Klay makes up for it. And I’ve been on the opposite side of a lot of “Let’s shoot that” moments with him that just didn’t go the way I wanted.

As for the mental game of chess, he’s one of the best to ever do it. The guy can get the Queen’s Guard to grab him in less than five minutes. I’m scared to badmouth Draymond at an indie gig even though he’s never done a comedy.

If the Warriors don’t want to pay him, it’s their loss.
