A lightning strike burned three horses at a Lexington stable owned by trainer Wesley Ward. The trio includes Tiger fight (Tiger Ridge), who gave Ward his first win at the Royal Ascot meeting when he won at Windsor Castle in 2009 S. Also killed was the winning 5-year-old Modesto (Uncle Mo) and a 2-year-old boy Hootenanny.

“Investigators had just left and they determined that lightning hit the main pole and it sent all the electricity into the box in my barn and started the fire,” Ward said Sunday night.

Since his own victory at Royal Ascot, Strike the Tiger has become a frequent companion of Ward cadets towards the prestigious encounter.

“He was with me forever and he started us at Royal Ascot,” Ward said of 15-year-old gelding. We’ve just brought in Dr Wayne McIlwraith for surgery on his bangle – he’s having a bit of a problem with his bracelet – so he’ll be available in time to get back to Royal Ascot. That’s why he’s in the warehouse. It’s saddening. We are just sick of it.”

Regarding Modesto, who broke off his maidenhood at Keeneland last April, Ward added, “He will continue to pursue a career as an equestrian on a smaller ranch.”

News of the fire was first reported by National Horse Racing.
