Wakefield Trinity has come a long way in surviving the Betfred Super League with an impressive 30-12 win over the Wigan Warriors at Be Well Stadium.

The 18-point victory helped Trinity surpass the bottom team of Toulouse Olympique by 4 points when the relegation race became fierce.

Halfway through Jacob Miller and Mason Lino taking the damage in the sweltering heat, Miller tried and Lino hit five goals in a row, to increase the pressure on Toulouse.

The loss dented the Warriors ‘League Leaders’ Shield’s hopes as they are now six points behind first-placed St Helens with just four games left of the season.

Story of the game

Wakefield appeared to have taken the lead in the fourth minute as Miller took the lead, but the attempt was defeated because of the obstruction. Bevan French then closed in on Wigan five minutes later, but the good defense got rid of him.

Trinity finally broke the deadlock when a quick turn to the right was ended by a diving Lee Kershaw, but Lino succeeded in his attempt to switch.

The home side widened the lead in the 16th minute, Jai Whitebread cleared the ball and hit the ball just under the post, and Lino added a combination to make it 10-0.

Wakefield Trinity: Tries – Lee Kershaw, Jai Whitbread, Jacob Miller, Kelepi Tangiona, Lewis Murphy; Goal – Mason Lino (5).

Wigan Warriors: Attempt – Sam Halsall, Jai Field; Goal – Harry Smith (2).

Wakefield played as a possession team and the Warriors couldn’t handle their energy or enthusiasm. In an effort to limit their missteps, Wigan switched the French to full-back and Jai Field to the right.

Mike Cooper came close to giving the visitors the lead but lost the ball when he tried to cross the line.

Trinity let Wigan down with their difficult runs and ball moves and then Miller added a third attempt for his team. The full-back stepped over before Lino’s goal converted to a 16-0 lead.

Wigan finally hit back as the Frenchman jumped across the field before finding Sam Halsall with a long shot to score, while Harry Smith made no mistake with his kick.

Just before half-time, Lino scored from the penalty spot from the front right to make it 18-6 at halftime and in the second half things took a turn for the worse for the Warriors as Patrick Mago was put in the trash because of a crusher solver on Corey Hall.

Wakefield started the first half with intent again, forcing Field back on goal, but in sweltering conditions both teams found it difficult to maintain control and complete their half because fatigue occurs.

French came close with another attack but his dangerous hammer shot returned the ball to handball and Wigan had trouble building up his position on the field as Trinity dominated the midfield third. In the 18th minute, Miller made an unsuccessful attempt to score.

Wakefield showed great urgency to repel each wave of Warriors attacks and before Kelepi Tanginoa passed to give them some breathing space.
