Wage protests halt high-speed grocery deliveries at Zomato

NEW DELHI: About 50 food delivery company stores tomatogrocery unit of blink closed because cyclists have stopped working in the latest protest aimed at hitting the country’s gig economy as employees push for better wages.
Zomato in an email said it has introduced a new structure for motorists to compensate them for their efforts and is working with them to reopen closed stores.
To capitalize on the trend of “fast commerce” that ships within minutes for those in need of urgent supplies or just impulsive shopping, Zomato last year bought Blinkit for $550 million.
Blinkit has about 400 stores in India, of which 50 were closed, mainly in and around New Delhi, on Friday, a source close to the matter said.
Social media videos show hundreds of Blinkit cyclists protesting and holding up slogans against the introduction of a payment structure that they say will reduce their earnings per order. The Blinkit app on Friday showed some of its stores “temporarily unavailable” in New Delhi.
“We are worried because of this. No deliveries have taken place,” said Blinkit driver Ajay Kumar.
At a Blinkit store in the Noida region near New Delhi, a security guard told Reuters that no delivery man had taken orders since April 11 and the store was closed.
Blinkit competes with other major delivery players, including top retailer Dunzo backed by Reliance, Tata’s BigBasket and SoftBank-backed Swiggy in India’s fast-growing grocery market.
Zomato’s other food delivery services will continue as normal.
