VW Group Gen.Travel concept envisions a Level 5 . self-driving car

What would private vehicle ownership look like in a world where driving is no longer necessary? The Volkswagen Group, the world’s largest automaker, is exploring that with its Gen.Travel concept unveiled on Friday.

Gen.Travel is an electric vehicle with self-driving system rated at Level 5 out of Self-driving capability scale SAE. Level 5 is the ultimate goal of companies developing self-driving technology, as it means a vehicle that can handle all situations just like a human.

This ability has allowed Gen.Travel designers to remove the steering wheel and pedals. And the seats are designed in a modular way so that different functions can be met. For example, a table can be installed and the chairs are made facing each other to create a living room or office on wheels. A fully reclining chair can also be installed to create a bedroom on wheels. Voice activation and artificial intelligence can be used to control various functions.

Although Gen.Travel is not in production, VW Group says it offers a realistic prospect for mobility over the next decade. The concept also serves as a means to gather feedback on what the public wants in a vehicle where driving is no longer required, and some feedback, the automaker says. back then may end up defining features that appear in production models.

VW Group, presented a similar concept in 2017 called Sedric, is developing a self-driving system for personal vehicles through its software development arm Cariad. The automaker is also working with American self-driving technology company Argo AI to develop a robotaxi . service is expected to provide the first rides in 2025. The service, will use Volkswagen ID.Buzz for robotaxis, will initially launch in some German cities but VW Group intends expand it to the United States. The service will be rated at Level 4 on the SAE scale, as robots will be limited to the areas in which they can operate, similar to services currently operated by Waymo and Cruise.

VW Group will introduce Gen.Travel to the public for the first time at Chantilly Arts & Elegance this weekend at Chateau de Chantilly, north of Paris. Renault will also use the event to reveal a concept.
