Volvo Cars will launch Ride Pilot unattended autonomous driving to customers in the state of California by building on the safety standard that will be found in Volvo Cars’ next generation of pure electric cars. Once it has been verified as safe for highway use and pending further approvals, the Ride Pilot will be available as an additional subscription on the all-electric SUV, a new flagship vehicle from the company. The company will be revealed later this year.

The software was developed by autonomous driving (AD) software company Zensact, along with Volvo Cars’ in-house developer team and developers from Luminar, one of its technology partners. The sensor suite includes about two dozen sensors, including Luminar’s Iris LiDAR sensor, which works with developed software.

“We are proud to announce the tentative US launch of our first truly unattended autonomous driving feature,” said Mats Moberg, head of research and development at Volvo Cars. our priority, as we aim to set a new industry standard for autonomy without compromising safety.” “Having Zensact’s all-new AD software and Luminar’s LiDAR standard in our all-new electric SUV is a game changer for Volvo Cars, as well as car and driver safety. automatic.”

The software-sensor combination will be standard on Volvo Cars’ all-electric SUV, after the Ride Pilot has undergone Volvo Cars’ verification and testing process, including confirming the technology is safe. Safe for highway use in a number of different conditions.

Volvo Cars has been testing autonomous driving functions on the roads of Sweden with Zensact and collecting data across Europe and the US. By the middle of this year, the company intends to begin its first tests on California roads, where climate, traffic conditions and regulatory frameworks create a favorable environment for the introduction of autonomous driving.

Ödgärd Anderson, CEO of Zensact adds: “Delivering a new safety standard to the industry that requires a rigorous level of testing and verification will expand globally. “Zenseact AD software plays an important role in this new standard and in the journey towards collision-free.”

“Luminar’s vision is to democratize next-generation safety and autonomy, and we’ve seen this come to fruition with the first vehicle to launch on Volvo’s new platform,” said Austin Russell, who founder and CEO said. “With Luminar as standard on every vehicle, their next SUV has a chance to be the safest vehicle on the road.”
