Volvo EX90’s passenger sensor system can save trapped loved ones

Volvo’s EX90 electric SUV launching on 9 November will be the first vehicle on sale with a new monitoring system designed to detect the faintest movements, such as that of a sleeping child, throughout the interior, including the trunk.

The system relies on radar sensors mounted around the cabin, as in the overhead console and roof-mounted reading lights, as well as in the trunk, and can detect sub-millimeter movement. It can then warn vehicle owners if children or pets are left behind, which could be saved on a hot day.

According to Kids and Cars, a nonprofit focused on preventing injury and death in children, as well as pets, in and around vehicles, last year saw 23 children die from heatstroke. after being left in the car. And it’s not always the case that a parent or caregiver simply forgets. In some cases, children gain access to vehicles and become trapped while they are unsupervised.

The system is activated each time the owner attempts to lock the vehicle and determines if the vehicle is empty of people or pets before applying the lock. If the car fails to lock, the infotainment screen will display a warning reminding the vehicle owner to check the vehicle for the occupants. The system can also turn on the climate control to make the cabin comfortable if it detects any people or pets inside.

Toyota announced a similar system in May, although Toyota’s version is still in the concept stage.

Volvo will eventually roll out the system across its entire product line, though only in markets where a specific frequency of use of the system is approved for use in cars.

The EX90 has also been confirmed to come with a driver monitor that uses radar and camera sensors to look for signs of distraction. The system is designed to allow a vehicle to stop safely if it perceives the driver to be sick or asleep.

The EX90 is Volvo’s successor to the XC90 electric. It will go on sale in 2023 and will be manufactured at a plant in Charleston, South Carolina, for the North American markets. The factory will also build a Polestar 3 electric SUV.
